Happy New Year! I hope your year is already off to a healthy, happy, and wonderful start. Although it may be a whole new year, I am certainly bringing smoothie bowls into 2021 with me. While others proclaim, “New year, new me!” I will unabashedly sit over here with my never-ending list of smoothie bowl creations. (There are many more to come!)
I truly love beginning my day with a colorful, nourishing, fruity (and oh so pretty) bowl. If you haven’t tried a smoothie bowl yet, this is your sign to get in the kitchen, turn on the blender, and dig on in. Smoothie bowls are quick and easy to make, ready within minutes, and easily customizable. My favorite part? Adding all sorts of toppings and decorating it just the way you like it!

What ingredients are in a raspberry orange smoothie bowl?

- Raspberry: Raspberries are loaded with antioxidants and several vitamins, like vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin E.
- Orange: Oranges are also packed with vitamin C. For this recipe, it’s best to use a frozen orange. This helps to create a thick smoothie consistency that holds up various toppings. Oranges have a high water content, so using the fresh variety will create a thinner smoothie and the toppings will sink through it.
- Banana: Frozen bananas are my secret ingredient for nearly all smoothie bowl recipes. They provide a super thick and creamy consistency that is similar to soft serve ice cream. I recommend using overripe bananas and removing the peel prior to freezing them. Overripe bananas have a yellow peel with brown specks all across them.
- Orange zest: Orange zest provides a bold, citrusy flavor.
- Plant-based milk: Use your favorite plant-based milk whether it’s almond milk, coconut milk, or another variety. Alternatively, replace it with orange juice.
- Maple syrup: This ingredient is entirely optional. If you want the flavor to be sweeter, add a dash of maple syrup.
Using orange peel in a smoothie
This smoothie recipe is made with orange zest. What is orange zest? Simply put, it’s the finely-grated outer peel of an orange. Yes, I’m referring to the tough peel that most people toss in the trash! It’s not only edible, but it’s full of nutrition. Orange peels provide more vitamin C and fiber than the inner orange flesh itself. They pack a bright, tangy, flavorful punch to any recipe.
Pro tip: If you plan to eat part of the orange peel, I recommend purchasing organic oranges and washing them well before enjoying.
How to zest an orange
Creating orange zest may sound like a fancy procedure, but it’s incredibly easy. You can use a microplane, grater, or knife to accomplish this task.
How to zest an orange:
- Microplane: Hold the orange in one hand and the microplane in your other hand. Drag the microplane across the orange to remove the outer peel. Repeat the motion as you rotate the orange until the entire peel has been removed.
- Grater: Place the grater on a flat surface. Hold the grater sturdy with one hand and the orange in your other hand. Drag the orange up and down the grater, removing the outer orange peel. Repeat the motion and rotate the orange until the entire peel has been removed.
- Knife: Use clean hands to separate the orange from its peel. Place the peel on a cutting board and finely mince it lengthwise and crosswise.
A few notes on this raspberry orange smoothie recipe
Be sure to use frozen fruit. For a thick and creamy consistency that holds up several toppings, use frozen fruit. If you use fresh fruit, the smoothie will be thin and runny instead. Always remove the peels of your bananas and oranges prior to freezing them.
Add sweetener as needed. If you prefer smoothies that are quite sweet, you can add a dash of maple syrup or another sweetener of your choosing. This ingredient is completely optional.
Add your favorite toppings. Don’t forget this important step! Toppings are the best part of a smoothie bowl. I recommend adding granola or coconut flakes for a crunchy texture and fresh fruit for a burst of flavor. Other delicious ideas include nuts, seeds, nut butter, cacao nibs, and dried berries.

- 2 frozen bananas, peeled prior to freezing
- 1 frozen orange, peeled and segmented prior to freezing
- 1 cup frozen raspberries
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- 1/2 to 1 cup plant-based milk
- 1–2 tbsp maple syrup (optional, to sweeten)
- Fruit, granola, coconut flakes, nuts, seeds, or nut butter
- Combine ingredients in a high-speed blender.
- Blend ingredients until smooth and creamy.
- Transfer smoothie to a bowl. Add your favorite toppings. Enjoy!
- Be sure to peel the bananas and orange prior to freezing them. If you frequently make smoothie bowls, I recommend keeping bananas in the freezer at all times. This way, they are always ready to go whenever you’re craving a smoothie bowl!
- You can use fresh fruit instead of frozen fruit, but the smoothie bowl will have a thin/runny consistency rather than a thick/creamy consistency.
