Is pumpkin good for you?

As a dessert lover, it doesn’t take much to convince me that “pie for breakfast” is a good idea. I am always down for a dessert-focused creation. However, excuses aren’t needed when it comes to enjoying this pumpkin pie smoothie. Why not? Well, pumpkin is actually good for you!

There’s quite a list of health benefits regarding this orange fruit. In particular, it’s loaded with vitamin A – just one cup contains 245% of your daily recommended intake. Additionally, pumpkin is a great source of vitamin C, potassium, vitamin E, and iron. It’s low calorie, immune-boosting, and may even promote heart health and healthy skin. Fear not, this pumpkin smoothie recipe can be included in a healthy diet. Just don’t forget your veggies and proteins the rest of the day, sound good?

  • Pumpkin purée: Be sure to use canned pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling. Alternatively, you can use homemade pureed pumpkin instead.
  • Banana: Bananas act as a natural sweetener and provide a super creamy consistency. Don’t forget to use frozen ripe bananas and remove the peels prior to freezing them.
  • Almond milk: Use any plant-based milk, such as almond milk or oat milk.
  • Pecans: Pecans are found in various fall treats, so I thought it would be fun to add them to this smoothie. They are a great source of zinc, copper, and are linked to good heart health.
  • Almond butter: Almond butter is high in vitamin E and contains antioxidant compounds. Paired with pecans, these healthy fats make the smoothie more filling and satisfying.
  • Maple syrup: This smoothie is sweetened naturally with maple syrup. You can also use medjool dates or honey (if you aren’t vegan).
  • Pumpkin pie spice: This seasonal blend contains warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. Make your own at home or pick up the pre-made blend at a grocery store.
  • Cinnamon: Although pumpkin pie spice already contains some cinnamon, I love adding more for a deeper cinnamon flavor.
  • Vanilla: Add a dash for a sweet hint of vanilla.

Smoothies are pretty self-explanatory, but let’s break it down anyway. 😉

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender. This includes pumpkin, banana, oat milk, pecans, almond butter, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
  2. Next, blend the ingredients until smooth and creamy, adding more almond milk as needed.
  3. Pour smoothie into glasses. Sprinkle some granola and crushed pecans on top, if you’d like. Enjoy!

Recipe variations

Make it a PSL. We’ve all heard of pumpkin spice lattes, but did you know it’s possible to make a pumpkin spice latte smoothie? Simply swap cold-brew coffee for almond milk. The end result will be a creamy, nourishing, refreshing PSL smoothie that’s guaranteed to become a seasonal favorite.

Add protein powder. Make it a protein pumpkin smoothie by adding a scoop of plant-based protein powder. I recommend using a vanilla-flavored variety.

Make it green. Ok, so your smoothie won’t have that vibrant orange hue… but it will be jam-packed with fiber and nutrients! Feel free to toss in a few handfuls of fresh spinach or kale to turn this recipe into a green smoothie for fall. If you’re worried about tasting the greens, stick with spinach. I promise, it’s flavorless so you won’t even notice it’s in there.

How to make it nut-free: First, swap in oat milk for almond milk. Second, swap in yogurt for the almond butter and pecans. The final result is similar to the original, just without the nuts.

Add cocoa. All of my chocolate lovers out there will adore this twist. Toss in 2 tbsp cocoa (or raw cacao powder) for a rich chocolate flavor. Mmmmmm.
