‘Tis the season for holiday treats and peppermint-flavored goodies! I always enjoy creating seasonal twists on my favorite recipes, and smoothie bowls are often included. This year, you may have already tried my Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Bowl and Apple Pie Smoothie Bowl. Now that Christmas is fast approaching, a peppermint-inspired bowl was next on the list!

This bowl is healthy enough for breakfast, but tasty enough for dessert. It’s packed with wholesome ingredients, including frozen bananas, unsweetened cocoa powder, medjool dates, and cold brew coffee. You can keep it simple with coconut flakes and cacao nibs on top, or go all out with chocolate chips and crushed candy canes!

(And if you love peppermint mocha, be sure to try these Peppermint Mocha Donuts as well!)

This peppermint mocha smoothie bowl is:

    • Vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free
    • Rich and chocolatey with a hint of peppermint extract
    • Made with only 5 ingredients
    • No added sugar // naturally sweetened with dates

What ingredients are in a peppermint mocha smoothie?

    • Banana: The base of this smoothie bowl is made with frozen bananas. They help create a thick and creamy consistency. Be sure to use ripe bananas – they should have a yellow peel with brown specks all across them. Peel the bananas before storing in the freezer.
    • Cocoa: Unsweetened cocoa powder gives this smoothie its chocolate flavor.
    • Medjool dates: This smoothie is naturally sweetened with medjool dates. Don’t forget to remove the pits before adding them to your blender.
    • Peppermint extract: A small dash of peppermint extract gives this smoothie bowl its minty flavor. A little goes a long way, so start small and add more only as needed.
    • Coffee: Instead of water or plant-based milk, cold brew coffee is the liquid for this mocha smoothie. It provides a subtle coffee flavor.

    Recipe variations

    • Instant coffee: To make a substitution for the cold brew coffee, use ½ cup plant-based milk and 1 teaspoon instant coffee.
    • Cacao powder: Raw cacao powder can replace the unsweetened cocoa powder.
    • Maple syrup: To substitute the medjool dates, add 2 tablespoon maple syrup instead.

Tips to perfect this holiday smoothie bowl

Use frozen ripe bananas. Ripe bananas have yellow peels with brown specks all across them. Remove the peels, then store the bananas inside a sealed bag or container in the freezer. If you create smoothie bowls often, I recommend keeping a batch of bananas stored in the freezer at all times. This way, they will be ready to go whenever you’re craving a smoothie!

Start small with the peppermint extract. The intensity of peppermint extract varies depending on the brand. I suggest starting with ½ teaspoon and tasting the smoothie before adding more. You may find that ½ teaspoon is plenty flavorful.

Add ice. If needed, you can add a few ice cubes to thicken the consistency. A smoothie bowl should have a creamy consistency so it’s capable of holding toppings.

    Topping suggestions

If you ask me, toppings are the best part of any smoothie bowl! There are a variety of festive toppings to choose from for this peppermint mocha smoothie. Here are my favorites:

    • Coconut flakes
    • Fresh mint leaves
    • Dark chocolate chips
    • Cacao nibs
    • Crushed candy cane
    • Chocolate granola
