What ingredients are in chocolate chip banana bars?
- Bananas: Put your overripe bananas to good use with this baked good! Overripe bananas have yellow peels with brown spots all over them. Since they are sweet and soft, they create a delicious flavor and texture. Do not use green (starchy) bananas.
- Nut butter: Use any nut butter, including peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter. I highly recommend peanut butter as it gives the best flavor.
- Almond flour: Almond flour is made from finely ground almonds. In particular, superfine blanched almond flour will produce the best results.
- Oat flour: Oat flour is made from finely ground rolled oats. If you are following a strict gluten-free diet, be sure you purchase a certified gluten-free kind. It’s possible to make oat flour at home, too! Read my instructions below.
- Coconut sugar: Instead of refined sugar, coconut sugar sweetens this wholesome dessert.
- Plant-based milk: Any type of plant-based milk can be used for this baked good. I always use almond milk, but oat milk or coconut milk will work just as well.
- Vanilla: Add a dash of vanilla extract to enhance the overall flavor. Baked goods aren’t complete without it.
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon is optional, but I recommend including this warm anti-inflammatory spice.
- Chocolate chips: Use your favorite vegan chocolate chips, semisweet or dark. For a low sugar option, stevia-sweetened chocolate chips taste great.

Tips for perfecting this recipe
How to make oat flour at home
Can’t find oat flour or forget to pick some up at the store? No worries! You can easily make oat flour if you have plain oatmeal on hand.
To make homemade oat flour for this recipe, add 2 cups rolled oats/quick oats to a food processor (or a high-speed blender). Pulse, grind, and blend the oats until a superfine flour is formed. You want it to be as similar to regular flour as possible, so process the oats as much as you can. After, measure 1 cup oat flour and proceed with the recipe.
How to make them nut free
For a nut free bars, use sunflower seed butter or tahini.
How to make them low sugar
To reduce the sugar content, I suggest replacing the coconut sugar with a granulated sugar substitute. Additionally, use stevia-sweetened chocolate chips instead.
How to store the bars
Once the bars have cooled completely, store them in a sealed container on the counter for 3 days. If you live in a hot and humid environment, I recommend storing them in the refrigerator. However, keep in mind the bars will dry out more in the refrigerator (making them less moist). If storing long term, place the bars inside the freezer. They will keep for 2-3 months.

These are amazing!! Thank you so much for a wonderful recipe.
You are so welcome, Emily! Thanks for your sweet review! ๐
Made this today. My husband took one bite and said Sunday breakfast. He now wants these every Sunday morning lol. I did not have oat flour so use 1cup bobโs red mill 1:1 and 1cup bobโs red mill almond flour and cooked it as said. I also used 3 bananas. Thank you for sharing this. Already looking forward to making it again
Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing, Jen! Enjoy ๐
These are really good and super easy to make!
Thank you so much, Sarah! ๐
These are really good! My kids gobbled them up. I didnโt realize my mixed nut butter had chia seeds in itโฆ. I wouldnโt use it again personally but my kids still didnโt care. Thank you. Will be making often. Delicious.
Thank you so much, Christina! I’m so glad you and the kids enjoyed these banana blondies ๐ Happy baking!
Can we add 2 cups almond flour instead of oat flour?
I don’t recommend almond flour because it contains more moisture than oat flour. The end result will likely be too gooey and fall apart!
These are so yummy!!!!
Thank you, Nicole! ๐
Yum! I love that these can be dessert or breakfastโmy favorite kind of bake ๐ Say they were a little bit dry after storing on the counter for a few days. Could be that my peanut butter was a little bit dry and/or I overbaked? They were still deliciousโthat hint of cinnamon is perfect! My fiancรฉ loved them, so I will definitely make again.
Thanks, Claire! I’m happy to hear that you and your fiancรฉ loved them. ๐ Oat flour really absorbs moisture, so any baked good that contains oat flour is best enjoyed within the first 48 hours. You can always store these bars in the refrigerator to help maintain the moist texture for a longer period of time. That should do the trick. Enjoy! xo
So delicious
Thank you, Sareh! So glad you enjoyed these chocolate chip banana bars ๐
Oops, forgot to add the stars
My oldest son is gluten and dairy free, so I am always searching for recipes that not only he can eat, but the rest of the family will find tasty too. This is one of those recipes! Delicious and you would never know it is gluten and dairy free. I highly recommend to anyone! I upped the chocolate chips to one cup and still sprinkled additional ones on top. Thanks for the great recipe!
Thank you so much, Audrey! So glad that your son and the whole family can enjoy this treat! ๐
I eat a peanut butter banana sandwich every single day for lunch, no joke, so its safe to say it’s my favorite combo. But these blondies take pb banana to a whole new level. They are soo gooey and perfect. Already planning to make another batch!
Hey Molly, thank you for the sweet comment! I am right there with you on the peanut butter + banana obsession. It’s such a delicious combo, and somehow, it never gets old! I’m so glad you loved these blondies ๐
Hi, can you write the amount of ingredients in grams? Especially when it comes to flour? I’m really just a beginner, and want to make it in a good way.
Hey, Marta! Thank you for this request. This is something I am planning to add to my recipes in the near future. ๐ I am sincerely taking this into consideration, as I know it would be helpful for beginners. I will update this comment once the measurements in grams are added to this post. Happy baking! xo
Made this a lot of time and still my favorite ever! Thank you soooo much!!! ๐
Aww thank you so much, Abi! I’m super happy to hear you’ve been loving this recipe! ๐
These came out beautifully! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hey, I want to make these blondies because they look so good! Just wondered if I can substitute the almond flour with something like coconut flour or something different ? ๐
Hi, Jule! I have not tested this recipe with coconut flour, so I cannot say for certain. However, coconut flour is a very common substitution for almond flour so I believe it will work just fine! Otherwise, you can also use 2 cups of oat flour instead. Please let me know how it goes if/when you try a substitution! ๐
THESE ARE SO GOOD! Sent the recipe to all of my friends so they could make too! My brother and dad were shocked they were vegan they were so good!!
